Overview
Mount Everest (8848 m) stands on the border between Nepal and Tibet; its north side lies in the Tibet Autonomous Region. This ten-day tour includes Lhasa's great landmarks: the Potala Palace on Red Hill, built under the 5th Dalai Lama from 1645, the Jokhang Temple, more than 1300 years old, the Barkhor, Sera, Drepung and the Norbulingka summer palace, with a free day to acclimatize. The road then passes Yamdrok Lake from the Kamba La viewpoint, Gyantse's Kumbum with its 77 chapels, Tashilhunpo Monastery with its 26 m Maitreya Buddha, and Sakya Monastery (1073), before crossing the Pang La (5120 m), with views of several 8000 m peaks, to Rongbuk Monastery and the Everest Base Camp area. Border status: as of September 2026 the Nepal-Tibet land crossings (Gyirong/Kyirong-Rasuwagadhi and Zhangmu-Kodari) were reported closed to tourists. While they remain closed, the trip ends with a flight from Lhasa instead of the overland exit to Kathmandu. All foreigners need a Tibet Travel Permit, arranged through a licensed Tibetan agency, plus a Chinese visa or visa-free eligibility; areas outside Lhasa need additional permits and a guide is compulsory throughout. Tibet can close to foreign visitors at short notice, typically around February-March.
