Overview
Om Namah Shivaya. Mount Kailash (6638 m) is holy to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bon followers, combining deep religious significance with great natural beauty. This helicopter-supported yatra shortens the long overland journey by flying from Nepalgunj to Simikot and then by helicopter to Hilsa on the Tibetan border. From Hilsa, Land Cruisers take you to Purang (Taklakot) for acclimatization, then to Lake Manasarovar for a holy bath and puja, and to Darchen and Ashtapad. The full three-day parikrama around Kailash goes via Dirapuk and over the Drolma La to Zutulpuk before returning via Khojarnath temple to Hilsa and flying back to Kathmandu. All foreigners need a Tibet Travel Permit, arranged through a licensed Tibetan agency, plus a Chinese visa or visa-free eligibility; areas outside Lhasa need additional permits and a guide is compulsory throughout. Tibet can close to foreign visitors at short notice, typically around February-March.
