Overview
The great overland pilgrimage from Lhasa across the Tibetan plateau to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Ngari, western Tibet. After acclimatizing in Lhasa you travel via Gyantse and Shigatse, then west along the Yarlung Tsangpo via Lhatse and Saga, with views of Everest, Shishapangma and the Himalaya from the high passes. At Lake Manasarovar you spend time on the shore of the sacred lake, then walk the three-day kora around Kailash via Dirapuk, the Drolma La (about 5630 m) and Zutulpuk before returning to Lhasa. The kora is a serious high-altitude walk; ponies and porters can be hired at Darchen. Kailash and Ngari need additional permits on top of the Tibet Travel Permit. All foreigners need a Tibet Travel Permit arranged through a licensed Tibetan agency, plus a Chinese visa or visa-free eligibility; areas outside Lhasa need extra permits and a guide is compulsory. Tibet can close to foreign visitors at short notice, typically around February-March.
