Overview
A week-long journey from Lhasa across the Tibetan plateau to the north side of Mount Everest. After two days in Lhasa at Drepung and Sera monasteries, the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street, you drive along the sky-blue Yamdrok Lake, snow-capped in winter, past the Karo La glacier to Gyantse's Pelkor Chode Monastery and on to Shigatse. After visiting Tashilhunpo, the road climbs over high passes to Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world, for sunset and sunrise over Everest's north face and a visit to the Everest Base Camp area (about 5200 m), where visitors are now limited to the Rongbuk area. The return heads towards Pekutso Lake and the Gyirong border. Border status: as of September 2026 the Nepal-Tibet land crossings (Gyirong/Kyirong-Rasuwagadhi and Zhangmu-Kodari) were reported closed to tourists. While they remain closed, the trip ends with a flight from Lhasa instead of the overland exit to Kathmandu. All foreigners need a Tibet Travel Permit, arranged through a licensed Tibetan agency, plus a Chinese visa or visa-free eligibility; areas outside Lhasa need additional permits and a guide is compulsory throughout. Tibet can close to foreign visitors at short notice, typically around February-March.
