Overview
The Kharta valley is one of the most beautiful and least visited corners of Tibet, on the eastern side of Everest. After three nights in Lhasa for acclimatization and a visit to Tashilhunpo in Shigatse, you drive to Kharta, where the first camp already has views of Everest, Lhotse and Makalu. The trek climbs through rhododendron and juniper country and over high pastures towards the Kangshung (east) face of Everest, crossing the Doya La at around 5300 m to the Pola valley, before driving to the Rongbuk area on the north side of Everest for close views of the north face. Border status: as of September 2026 the Nepal-Tibet land crossings (Gyirong/Kyirong-Rasuwagadhi and Zhangmu-Kodari) were reported closed to tourists. While they remain closed, the trip ends with a flight from Lhasa instead of the overland exit to Kathmandu. All foreigners need a Tibet Travel Permit, arranged through a licensed Tibetan agency, plus a Chinese visa or visa-free eligibility; areas outside Lhasa need additional permits and a guide is compulsory throughout. Tibet can close to foreign visitors at short notice, typically around February-March.
