Overview
This trek explores the area around Namcha Barwa (7782 m), the great peak at the eastern end of the Himalaya, encircled by the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Here the river cuts the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, recognized in 1994 as the largest canyon in the world, averaging about 5000 m deep. The region has a remarkable variety of plants, landscapes and climates, from subtropical forest to glaciers, and is home to the Monpa and Lhoba peoples, who keep their traditional customs. From Lhasa you drive to Bayi in Nyingchi and on to Pelung (Pailong), then trek across the river on a cable bridge to the villages of Yumei and Zhaqu for views of Namcha Barwa and the gorge, returning via Bayi and Pasum Tso. All foreigners need a Tibet Travel Permit, arranged through a licensed Tibetan agency, plus a Chinese visa or visa-free eligibility; areas outside Lhasa need additional permits and a guide is compulsory throughout. Tibet can close to foreign visitors at short notice, typically around February-March.
