Overview
The classic circuit of central Tibet. After visiting the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor, Drepung and Sera in Lhasa, you cross the Kamba La (about 4790 m) to the turquoise Yamdrok Lake and pass the Karo La glacier on the way to Gyantse. In Gyantse you visit the Pelkor Chode monastery and its Kumbum, a great tiered stupa filled with chapels and murals, and the old fortress above the town. In Shigatse, Tibet's second city, you visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, seat of the Panchen Lamas, with its giant Maitreya Buddha, before returning to Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo. All foreigners need a Tibet Travel Permit arranged through a licensed Tibetan agency, plus a Chinese visa or visa-free eligibility; areas outside Lhasa need extra permits and a guide is compulsory. Tibet can close to foreign visitors at short notice, typically around February-March.
