Overview
Lhasa's great monasteries and palaces combined with an overnight trip to Namtso, the Heavenly Lake. After three days in Lhasa at the Potala Palace, Jokhang, Barkhor, Sera and Drepung, you drive north over the Largen La (about 5190 m) to Namtso (4718 m), one of the highest large lakes on Earth, with the snow peaks of the Nyenchen Tanglha range on its southern shore. You stay by the lake at Tashi Dor peninsula for sunset and sunrise, walk among the prayer flags and caves, and see nomads grazing yaks on the grasslands. Namtso is high and cold; it is best visited from May to October. All foreigners need a Tibet Travel Permit arranged through a licensed Tibetan agency, plus a Chinese visa or visa-free eligibility; areas outside Lhasa need extra permits and a guide is compulsory. Tibet can close to foreign visitors at short notice, typically around February-March.
