Overview
Mustang lies at the northern end of the Kali Gandaki valley, beyond Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. It has two distinct parts: the south, with its Thakali and Gurung villages, and the north, the ancient Kingdom of Lo, where Tibetan language, culture and traditions still predominate. As a restricted area it requires a special government permit. After the dramatic flight to Jomsom, the trek heads north through Kagbeni and a desert landscape of eroded cliffs, cave dwellings, multi-storey houses, red monasteries and castles, via Chele, Samar, Ghami and Tsarang to Lo Manthang (3810 m), the walled capital. A full day is spent exploring its royal palace and gompas, with options to visit Tingkhar or Chhoser and its cave monasteries. The return passes Ghar Gompa at Lo Gekar, over 1200 years old. Because Mustang lies in the rain shadow, it can be trekked in summer.
