Overview
Dolpo opened to trekkers in 1989, yet few have experienced its dramatic terrain and traditional villages. Lying south of Tibet, the region reflects strong Tibetan Buddhist and Bon influences, with historic links to the ancient trans-Himalayan salt trade. This camping loop flies to Juphal via Nepalgunj and follows the Suli Gad to Ringmo village on Phoksundo Lake, with Nepal's highest waterfall (107 m) on the way. Following the trail made famous by Eric Valli's film 'Caravan', it crosses the Kang La to Shey Gompa, the 11th-century monastery beneath Crystal Mountain, then continues through Namgung, Saldang and the Nam Khong valley, over the Jeng La with golden views of Dhaulagiri, and down through the fertile Tarap valley, Dho Tarap and the old fortress town of Tarakot back to Dunai and Juphal. Upper Dolpo requires a special restricted-area permit.
