Overview
Upper Dolpo is a culturally Tibetan region of west Nepal, dotted with Buddhist and Bon monasteries. Foreigners were not allowed into the region until 1996, so it remains largely untouched by tourism. The highlight is Shey Gompa, where pilgrims walk around Crystal Mountain, considered the younger brother of Mount Kailash. This expedition-style camping trek starts at Juphal and the turquoise Phoksundo Lake, crosses the Kang La (5380 m) to Shey Gompa and the Saldang La to the villages of Namgung, Saldang and Tinje, then leaves the usual Dolpo circuit to follow a demanding section of the Great Himalaya Trail over the Chharka La and the Sangda La passes, finally descending to Jomsom in the Kali Gandaki valley. One of the most remote and rewarding long treks in Nepal.
