Overview
Exploring Lower Dolpo opens up one of the hidden wildernesses of the Himalaya. This remote region in west Nepal is home to Buddhist monasteries and the stunning Phoksundo Lake inside Shey Phoksundo National Park, with ancient villages, high passes, beautiful lakes and isolated gompas. Wildlife includes blue sheep, mountain goats, wolves and the elusive snow leopard. Bordered by the Dhaulagiri and Churen Himal ranges, Lower Dolpo has stayed isolated despite centuries of Tibetan settlement. The route flies to Juphal, follows the Bheri and Tarap gorges to the walled village of Dho Tarap, then crosses the Numa La (5190 m) and Baga La (5070 m) with views as far as Dhaulagiri and Kanjiroba before reaching Ringmo and the turquoise Phoksundo Lake, the setting of the film 'Caravan'. Special permits from Kathmandu are required.
