Overview
Gosainkunda Lake (4380 m) is a spectacular trekking destination reached on a short trek from Kathmandu. The route starts at Sundarijal in Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and climbs through subtropical forest into the alpine zone, passing rhododendron, oak, pine and birch before the treeline. Walking through Tamang villages via Chisapani, Kutumsang and Ghopte, a protected area home to red panda and good birdlife, the trail crosses the Laurebina La (4610 m) to Gosainkunda, a complex of around 108 alpine lakes that is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. The trek descends to Dhunche for the drive back to Kathmandu. It can be extended to Surya Peak or the Langtang valley.
