Overview
A quiet trek south of Thimphu through the Dagala range, a high plateau of alpine meadows and dozens of glacial lakes, the 'thousand lakes' of the trek's name. The route climbs from Genekha through forest to herders' camps, then crosses passes of around 4500 m between lakes such as Utsho, Hentsho and Dajatsho. On clear days the ridges give views across the Himalaya from Everest and Kanchenjunga to Jomolhari, Jichu Drake and Gangkar Puensum. Yak herders graze their animals here in summer. The tour includes sightseeing in Thimphu and Paro. Bhutan charges a Sustainable Development Fee of US$100 per person per night (rate confirmed through 31 August 2027), and all visitors travel with a licensed guide.
