Overview
An excellent day hike from Kathmandu through green forests with impressive views of snow-capped peaks and hill villages. The trail climbs to Chandragiri Hill (2551 m), on the southwestern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, famous for its sunrise and sunset panoramas. From the top you can see Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, the Langtang range and Dorje Lakpa to the east, while Makwanpur district stretches away on the far side of the hill. A 30-minute drive takes you to the trailhead at Matatirtha, and the hike finishes at either Hattiban or Pharping in Lalitpur district. Total walking time is 6-8 hours.
Day by day
30-minute drive from Kathmandu to Matatirtha in the Dhaksi area. Hike up through forest to the top of Chandragiri Hill (2551 m) for views of Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, Langtang and Dorje Lakpa, then descend to Hattiban or Pharping in Lalitpur for the drive back to Kathmandu. 6-8 hours of walking.
