Overview
A shorter alternative to the Goecha La trek that still reaches the high pastures of Dzongri (about 4000 m) in Khangchendzonga National Park. From Yuksom, Sikkim's first capital, the trail crosses suspension bridges over the Prek Chu and climbs through forests of oak, magnolia and rhododendron to Sachen, Bakhim and the Lepcha-Tibetan hamlet of Tshoka. Above Tshoka the route reaches the open meadows of Dzongri, where an early climb to the Dzongri viewpoint brings sunrise over Kanchenjunga, Kabru, Pandim and the Rathong peaks. The return follows the same trail to Yuksom. Spring brings rhododendron blooms; autumn has the clearest views. Foreign nationals need a Sikkim Restricted Area Permit (Inner Line Permit), issued online, at the Rangpo or Melli checkposts or on arrival, through the operator. A Protected Area Permit for the national park and a registered guide are also required.
