Overview
Makalu Base Camp lies inside the Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area, at the foot of Makalu (8463 m), the fifth-highest mountain in the world. This adventure trek passes through stunning scenery in one of the most remote regions of Nepal. The route begins with a flight to Tumlingtar and follows the Arun River valley through Rai and Sherpa villages, cornfields and terraces to Tashi Gaon, the last permanent settlement. It then climbs through rhododendron forest and over the Shipton La (about 4200 m) into the upper Barun valley, a wild glacial valley with close views of Makalu, Chamlang and Peak 6, and from base camp a view across to Everest and Lhotse. The Barun valley is part of a large cross-border protected area agreed between Nepal and China.
