Overview
Dhaulagiri (8167 m), the seventh-highest mountain in the world, towers above the Kali Gandaki gorge opposite the Annapurna massif. The circuit around it leads through one of Nepal's wildest and most remote areas, where the mountain scenery is simply breathtaking. From Beni the route follows the Myagdi Khola through Gurung and Magar villages to Italian Base Camp and Dhaulagiri Base Camp on the glacier, then crosses the French Col (5360 m) into the uninhabited Hidden Valley and the Dhampus Pass (5240 m) before descending to Jomsom in the Kali Gandaki. This is a camping expedition for experienced high-altitude trekkers in excellent condition; hotels are used only in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Beni. Autumn is the most reliable season, as snow and ice make the high passes difficult in winter and spring.
