Overview
A gentle trek in the cultural heartland of Bumthang, combining two days of walking with a cultural tour of Bhutan. After sightseeing in Paro and Thimphu, you drive over the Dochula and Pele La passes to Trongsa and Bumthang, home to many of the kingdom's oldest temples. The trek follows the Chamkhar Chhu through villages, temples and blue pine forest to Ngang Lhakhang, the Swan Temple, then climbs through juniper to the Phephe La (3340 m) and down into the Tang valley at Ugyenchholing, with its manor-house museum. Back in Jakar you visit Membartsho, the Burning Lake where the treasure-revealer Pema Lingpa found sacred texts, and the 7th-century Jambay Lhakhang and Tamshing Lhakhang with their old paintings.
